How to Contact Your Energy Supplier

Who to call depends on the problem. Gas leaks and power cuts are handled by emergency networks — not by Octopus, British Gas or any other supplier. Billing, meters, top-ups and switching are handled by your supplier.

Frequently asked questions

Who do I call about a gas leak — Octopus, British Gas or my own supplier?

None of them. Whoever your supplier is, call the National Gas Emergency Service free on 0800 111 999 (Northern Ireland: 0800 002 001). It is open 24/7. Leave the property, don’t use switches or flames, and turn off the gas at the meter if it is safe.

Who do I call in a power cut?

Call 105 free from any phone in Great Britain. It connects you to the network operator that runs the cables in your area — not your supplier — and they fix power cuts. In Northern Ireland call NIE Networks on 03457 643 643.

How do I find out who my energy supplier is?

Check a recent bill or email. For electricity, use the Find My Supplier service at findmysupplier.energy with your postcode. For gas, call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524.

My prepayment meter has run out — how do I get reconnected?

First use emergency or friendly credit on the meter. If you can’t top up, contact your supplier straight away and ask about extra support or emergency credit; Citizens Advice (0808 223 1133) can also help. If your supply was disconnected over debt, your supplier should reconnect you quickly once you pay or agree a repayment plan.

How do I complain about my energy supplier?

Complain to the supplier first and ask for a reference number. If it isn’t resolved within 8 weeks, or they send a "deadlock" letter, you can take it to the Energy Ombudsman free of charge on 0330 440 1624.
